Igrot Moshe 4:91:4 draws a distinction between mitzvot that are fulfilled through speech such as Megillah and Havdalah which theoretically could be fulfilled through a microphone or phone and Birkat Hamazon and Kriyat Shema which could not. He doesn't offer an explicit explanation, though presumably it is because Birkat Hamazon and Shema are Deoritta mitzvot and those should certainly not be fulfilled through a microphone. If so, then it would be worthwhile to note that Birkat Hamazon is only deoritta with certain conditions such as that a person needs to be full for it to be Deoritta. (This is based on a comment from a distinguished talmid chacham about who this halacha was presented). --YitzchakSultan (talk) 22:55, 17 May 2016 (EDT)
